Walking in Honour & Reverence of God

Honour and Reverence may sound like archaic and vestigial values from a lost past but they are fundamental to our life and living. God wants to bless us with individuality and self-expression as long as we know our place under authority. —And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

The family and the local church are where our character is formed. The challenge of the Christian home is to allow individuals to feel loved, to grow in maturity without being infantilized, humiliated, or demeaned. A nurturing home is a place where love, respect, dependency and dignity are propagated down the generations. God has set us a divine order – that is; the headship of the husband and the respect of parents from the children. No one can violate this divine order and expect to reap divine blessings.

Actually, the Lord Jesus seeks more than just mere outward compliance but instead, reaches deeper into the issues of our hearts. In Mark 7:6, the Lord quoted Isaiah 29:13-" These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” God sees our hearts and not just polite appearances.

Psalms 133:3 tells us that God will command the blessing and anointing to flow downward when there is genuine unity and mutual submission. So much blessing has been withheld from Christians because they took in the prevalent cultural values—namely self centeredness and the lack of respect for our parents and authority figures. Well, not all authority figures are godly, but our respect for their position should remained. When we violate the basic principles of God we will reap the consequences.

The bible has a simple and balanced teaching about family relationship in Ephesians 6:1-4 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2"Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3"that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

Let us ask God to help us to be better children and better parents.
